Even if that something means joining the one car club he had worked so hard to avoid. But there’s one person out there who can match him toe-to-toe...the hot mechanic pin-up doll of a woman with the body of a goddess and tomboy attitude would even give him a chance.

About The Author

Katana Collins is lucky enough to love her day job almost as much as she loves writing. She splits her time evenly between photographing boudoir and newborn portraits and writing steamy romances in a variety of genres -- paranormal, contemporary, new adult and suspense.

She lives in Portland, Maine, with an ever-growing brood of rescue animals: a kind of mean cat, a very mellow chihuahua, and a very not mellow lab puppy... oh yeah, there's a husband somewhere in that mix, too. She can usually be found hunched over her laptop in a cafe, guzzling gallons of coffee, and wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.

Excerpts

Happiness. Can you be happy without love? I've been pretty happy. It's been a year since my divorce was final and months since Maddox left. In that time I've felt joy, happiness, accomplishment, and I didn't need love to feel any of that.

I can live the rest of my life like this. It's not a huge challenge filling my physical needs. I just have to dodge the ones who think they can convince me that they are the one good man. The one that truly loves me, the one that's different than all the rest. Call me bitchy if you must, but I have a hard time containing my laughter when they start in on that speech. It's really just kinder when I get up, put my clothes on and leave.

I'll be unapologetic and honest. Because at the end of every single thing in life, there is always one thing left—the truth.

I put my hot chocolate on the tool chest and lay back on the pillows. I look at him expectantly, I'm not sure what to say. The sky is beautiful, there's no moon tonight and stars are shining brilliantly in the sky. The cicadas and crickets are audible over the soft music coming from the truck. There's an incredible air of peacefulness here. I let out a long sigh that I didn't know was there as though I was releasing part of my pain and my soul feels lighter, happier. I'm able to push aside the memory of how Maddox and I used to do this in his truck.

“Are you ready?” he says in a low whisper close to my ear.

“Ready for what?” I also whisper, even though I don’t' know why.

“Make a wish.” He points upward then in a smooth motion, pulls his hand down, scooping mine up. “There's the first one.”

A shooting star streaks across the midnight blue sky, I inhale a sharp breath. He turns to me, smiling.

At this moment I have no idea what to wish for. It feels like I could want for nothing. I'm content, light and... “I don't need to make a wish.” The words have trouble passing by the lump in my throat.

He runs his finger along my jawline. “There's always something you can wish for.”

“I don't feel like there's anything I want more than this moment.” The moisture in my eyes spills over, running down into my hair.

“Don't cry, pretty girl.” He catches the next tear falling.

“For the first time in a long time I'm not crying because I'm sad, it's because I'm happy.” I bite my lower lip, hoping to stop a deluge of relief from escaping.

“Then by all means, let it flow.” He smiles, “I will capture every tear you ever cry and always make it okay.”

“But there's something amazing about you and I need to know more. Your light, your energy, it's really awesome. And I know you've been through a lot and you're not looking for anything serious and I get that. But I want you to know I'd like to actually date you, and be your friend. Be here for you like Hunter and Boone.”

She pulls her hands away from mine. “Rhys, this is not how this is going to work.”
“Why not?” I ask, “Do you not enjoy spending time with me? Can you not see us being friends? I mean we have a lot in common.” This may be a good time to play the gallery card. “We're both artists, we're both lonely and we're both trying to make our way in this crazy world. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to help each other along.”

She stands up. “No, I have friends, I'm not lonely and I don't even really like you.”
I try not to let it sting; I remind myself that its the hurt talking, it's my wounded bird trying to fly away scared. “Not at all?”

There's remorse in her eyes and I'm not sure why, I hope it's because she realizes that what she's saying could really hurt. She inhales a breath, “Look, I told you my life is complicated right now and I don't need any more complications. You aren't supposed to be complicated. You are supposed to be fun and easy, not emotional or painful. If you can't be fun and easy, then I'm done.” She turns toward the door.

“Wren, please wait.” I reach for her hand. “I know you don't want a relationship and I get that. It isn't what I'm asking for, I'm just asking for us to be friends.”

“I don't fuck my friends.” She spits the words.

“I know what you've been through—” She cuts me off.

“You don't know shit. You have no idea what I've been through in my life.” She shakes her head in anger.

“I want to.” I say it quietly and it gives her pause.

“Yeah, you're making way too much of this. You've got to go. I'm sorry that Boone and Hunter lured you up here where you didn't belong. You don't belong in this part of my life, not now, not ever. And since you can't seem to get that through your head, you're done. Don't call, don't text, don't anything.” She goes through the door and gives it a good hard slam.

I smile even though this didn't go as I hoped. But that's okay, at least she said she was sorry, right?
