Release Day Blitz: Sweet Venom by Gena D. Lutz

Sweet Venom
(A Venin Assassin Novel)
By Gena D. Lutz

Blurb:
My name is Cassis Dark, and I am a Spider Venin. My bite is venomous and can paralyze a man within seconds of exposure, and if I choose, it can kill.
As a teenager, I was sold into slavery by my stepmother. As a newly freed woman, I fight to protect the innocent from a world of pain with which I'm all too familiar.

The evils that stalk the night aren’t all human. Good thing for their intended victims…neither am I.

Boots invaded my line of sight. My gaze swept upward, past tight blue jeans, over a black t-shirt stretched taut across a hard chest, and settled on Jake’s handsome face. He was smiling at me, and I found it impossible not to smile back. With a watchful eye, his gaze moved over my shoulder toward Punch Drunk then immediately returned with the same magnetic, unwavering grin.

My pulsed ratcheted up several beats, and heat surged through me as I tampered down the urge to reach out and push the straggling tress of hair that was falling into his eye and brushing across his chiseled cheekbone back behind his ear with the rest of his thick black mane.
He continued to stare at me.

My fingers twitched at my side.

Finally, I said, “Are you following me or something?”

Not such a terrible scenario if I were to be honest. It’s just the timing was way off for a quick romp with a yummy wolf.

He gave me a curious look. “I’m pretty sure I mentioned I’d be swinging by here after my set.”

Oh yeah, he had mentioned something to that effect. I shrugged and stepped to the side, out of his way, and waved a hand sideways. “Then by all means, don’t let me hold you up.”

He didn’t move, which I found rude considering I’d been rather polite—not the normal look I went for. His smile broadened, showing the tips of his canines. Even in his human form they were sharp and pointy.

“Cassis, I’ve missed you,” Ice said, and immediately pulled the trigger.

My legs carried me sideways as the bullet sliced through the air, grazing my cheek. A line of blood crawled down my face, but I didn’t feel a thing.

Keri’s braid moved suddenly, shooting forward like a whip. It flew in a quick, fluid motion, extending to around six or seven feet long. With exquisite precision, the stinger hit its mark, sinking deep within Edge’s chest.

Edge’s shocked stare fell to the twisted braid protruding from his body. As he realized what had happened to him, I witnessed true fear blossom in his eyes.

He shook his head, and wheezed, “No.”

“The bigger they are…” Keri began.

It only took a couple of seconds for the scorpion venom to work its way through the blood stream, dropping the oversized hellhound like a sack of potatoes to the hardwood floor.

“The harder they fall,” she finished, sounding pleased with herself.

I jumped back to my feet. The fangs in my mouth elongating, I could taste the venom welling at the tips. Violence and mayhem infused the air around me, spurring my arachnid instincts on.

Ice’s stare widened. It was the first time I’d ever seen him sweat. Normally, he was all cock and crow. For me, this was a far better look on him.

The next gunshot startled me out of thought. The bullet lodged deep inside my shoulder—that time I felt the slow burn of pain as it sizzled down my arm.

Excerpts

Gareth shifted uneasily in the darkened amphitheater. Another scene change. The effects were lovely and sometimes awe-inspiring, but he’d gotten the idea in the first half hour. He was ready to go.
He glanced to his left at Edge, who seemed fascinated with the show. Intriguing, since Edge had the attention span of a gnat. The other guys were more restless, jabbing each other when the bare-breasted art pieces appeared, but they managed to stay on the near side of rude.
He settled back for the duration. Maybe a little catnap. The lights came up as he started to close his eyes. He heard an indrawn breath and looked up. Holy, bloody, everlasting hell.
In the center of the vast stage, on a rotating platform in a single perfect spotlight, was David, the masterwork of Michelangelo. Gareth had seen it in Florence several times, and every sense he had told him he was looking at the actual statue, although his mind knew this was a human being. Glowing, luminous, absolutely still… sweet bloody Christ, how could someone do it? How could they have found a person so perfect?
He noticed a deep stillness in the audience and also among his mates. Edge was absolutely motionless. Unusual for him. But the statue, the guy, was just that beautiful.
Gareth cocked his head. The model’s legs were not as big and muscular as the Michelangelo. This “statue” was a bit leaner and even more graceful. The pedestal kept turning. He squinted. Bloody hell, he’d seen that perfect ass before. He peered into the pool of light as the David rotated. He’d seen those amazing cheekbones.

It was the guy from the beach and the shop. Gareth rifled through his program for the name. David Underwood. The one who owned the gallery. The fag. Gareth shifted onto his hip, leaning away from Edge. Wouldn’t do to let his pouf-hating friend see his massive erection.

As he approached the gallery, a figure stepped away from the building. He sucked wind, stopped, and slapped a hand over his heart. Shit. Not Phil. Not Phil. He swallowed hard.
The Aussie stepped closer. “Sorry to scare you. Are you okay?”
Couldn’t quite catch his breath. He nodded, but his inhale sounded in his ears.
“Jesus, I’m sorry, David. I keep fucking this up. I should just leave you alone like you asked me.” He shook his head, turned, and started walking away down Forest.
“Wait!” Shit, did he just say that?
The guy stopped and turned. “Yeh?” The word turned up on the end—hopefully.
“I have to give you points for not giving up. After me being such a shit and all.”
“I deserved it. I just—” He shrugged. “—don’t have much experience. None with guys, you know? I’m pretty bad at it.”
“You guarantee you’re not an ax murderer?”
The guy’s perfect lips in his perfect face turned up. “Do American ax murderers admit their profession? Must make policing damned easy.”
“Yep. All the cops are busy eating donuts as we speak.”
“So no, I’m not an ax murderer.” His face sobered. “Or anyone who means you harm.” He extended his hand. “Hello. I’m Gareth Marshall.”
David shook his hand. Big. Very callused. Very warm. “Okay, Gareth.” David crossed his arms. “What’s a nice guy like you doing with a homophobic asshole like that big blond?”
All kinds of emotions flashed across his face—anger, hurt, and embarrassment seemed uppermost. “He’s my volleyball partner.” He took a breath. “And actually my best friend.”
David frowned. “So he harasses every other gay guy, but not you?”
“He doesn’t know I’m gay.”
“Uh, sorry to tell you, but in the dictionary where it says ‘best friend,’ it says ‘guy who you tell all your secrets to.’”
“I know. But we’ve been friends since we were kids. He thinks he knows everything about me.”
“He’s missed a few sucked cocks, I gather.”
Gareth did that shrug thing. “A few.”
“So where do we go from here?”
He flashed a slightly saucy smile. “Where do you want to go, mate?”
“You’re the one lurking in doorways.”

Cowboys Don't Come Out
by Tara Lain

Blurb:
Rand McIntyre settles for good enough. He loves his small California ranch, raising horses, and teaching riding to the kids he adores—but having kids of his own and someone to love means coming out, and that would jeopardize everything he’s built. Then, despite his terror of flying, he goes on a holiday to Hana, Hawaii with his parents and meets the dark and mysterious Kai Kealoha, a genuine Hawaiian cowboy. Rand takes to Kai’s kid brother and sister as much as he drools over Kai, but the guy sports more prickles than a horned toad, and more secrets than the exotic land he comes from.

Kai’s earned his privacy and lives to protect his “kids.” He ought to stay away from the big, handsome cowboy for everyone’s sake—but since the guy’s just a haole on a short vacation, how much damage can he do? When all of Kai’s worst fears and Rand’s darkest nightmares come true at once, there’s not much chance for two cowboys who can’t—or won’t—come out.

Excerpts

He stopped and tried to hear over the rushing of the surf out beyond the reef if anyone else hid in the dark. No sounds. Fortunately, no big water hit this beach, so he didn’t have to worry about getting swamped. Actually, between the lapping waves and the brilliant moonlight, the scene resembled some fairy-tale romance. Fuck that.
Right where the dry sand verged on the wet, he flopped on his butt. What she’d said—that he settled for a good-enough life. That he wasn’t happy. Don’t I get to decide that?
He leaned back on his elbows. Yeah, but she’s right. I created a whole life—as if I was somebody else. Most people find “the one” and build a future so it suits them both. I imagined a cowboy and slid into his boots—Rand McIntyre. Say that with a drawl, son. Just one problem. I’m gay—always have been—and cowboys don’t come out. Where does that leave me? A-fucking-lone, pardner. Always will be.
You’re not the only gay cowboy.
Have you seen Brokeback Mountain? Shit.
Phosphorescence sparkled on the tops of the waves farther out. Pretty. Guess there could be all kinds of weird man-eating shit in that water.
Do you think more sharks and barracudas swim at night than during the day?
Yeah, right.
He sprang up, stripped his Hawaiian shirt off and tossed it on the sand, then pulled off the shorts his mom had given him. Commando. What would it feel like to have fishes nibbling at his balls? Not like anybody else was doing any nibbling. He strode into the water. Whoa! Not cold, just startling.
When he waded out past his thighs, his penis and balls started to float. He chuckled. Kind of like being a kid in the bathtub. Endless hours of fun playing with your own built-in toys. A few more steps, and he submerged to his shoulders. He gave a tiny shiver. Weird being sunk in inky blackness. Still, the water felt good. He kicked off and swam a few yards out, turned, and stroked back towards shore. He wasn’t a good enough swimmer to push his luck alone at night.

After treading water a couple of minutes, he pulled himself back into the shallows and sat on the hard wet beach. He glanced down. Some shrinkage, but his balls still lay on the sand. Remember to rinse them off or you’ll itch. Slowly he released his breath. What was he going to do? Answer? Same as always. Nothing. He couldn’t risk all the great shit he’d made to try to make it better.

Inside, twilight dim. The room smelled warm and spicy. Funny, he hadn’t put that scent together with Rand—but it was his, through and through. Nobody here. “Hello?”
“Looking for me?” Rand walked out of the bathroom wearing a heart-stopping, breath-robbing towel around his hips—uh, except for the slice of bare groin revealed because the towel stood out in front like a banyan tree canopy. That cotton tent had to be a lot more comfortable than the tight denim smothering Kai’s rising cock.
Too much air flowed out with Kai’s words and made him sound like he’d just run a half-marathon. “I was hoping that message about your nap might be intended for me.”
“Yep.”
“So what did you have in mind, cowboy?” Man, his heart throbbed in his dick. It ought to be dancing the salsa.
“Some riding lessons.”
“You’re the teacher.”
“Nah, I’m the quarter horse.”
Heart—stopped. “You want to bottom?”
“Yep.”
“Holy hell.”
Rand stared at Kai’s jeans and grinned. “You like that idea?”
“Oh yeah.”
“Good. Condoms and lube are on the bed. My ass, I mean stallion, is at your service.”
Kai staggered to the footstool in front of the corner chair, collapsed into it, and started yanking at his boots. Rand walked over slow and easy-like. “Take your hat, cowboy, or you want to fuck with it on?”
Fuck? Oh shit, how long since he’d been with a man? A person? His cock steamed and bobbed.

Rand grabbed Kai’s Stetson and tossed it onto the coffee table, then took hold of Kai’s other boot. The combination of two boots half-off flipped Kai onto his back on the chair like a giant turtle. Rand hauled off the one boot, then grabbed the other and pulled it too, sent both flying, then yanked on Kai’s jeans. “So much trouble getting riders properly dressed.”

I turned around, the red oven mitt still on my hand. “You wouldn’t really do that, would you?”
He stepped forward, his gaze piercing mine. “I’ve never made an empty threat. Brother or not, no man touches my female’s lemon cake.”
